I can't get my copy of FastDVD Copy to run because it can't find the website and apparently has to "phone home" with the serial number each time before it runs. It is made by Velan.

The FastDVD servers are apparently down, at least that is the indication I am getting from OpenDNS. I think you are out of luck until they come back up.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Posters on VersionTracker agree with that assessment.

Any "instead of" recommendations? I can only run Panther so I don't have iDVD as an option.

Download free MacTheRipper. Rip the DVD to an unprotected VIDEO_TS and then use something like toast to burn it back. (or are there free apps to take video ts folders back to disc? or can you just burn them as iso?)

Once you have your ripped DVD, you can create a disc image and burn it with Disk Utility. Open Disk Utility and go to the Images menu:

Images > New > Image from Folder . . .

In the resulting dialogue box, navigate to the folder created by your disc ripping utility and highlight it. From the image format drop down menu, choose "DVD/CD master" and hit save. Then you can burn the resulting image to DVD with Disk Utility. No Toast needed unless you want to make some alterations (for example, if you want to fit a dual layer rip to a single layer blank).

The above is for Panther, which is what the O.P. is running. Things might be slightly different in later versions of Disk Utility.

edited to add for the O.P.: By the way, I run iDVD 5 fine on Panther, and according to the system requirements for iLife '06, that could run that as well.
