Importing photos already imported to an iPad

Just back for a holiday where I took photos and downloaded them to my iPad mini (iOS 8) using an Apple SD card reader. I chose to keep the originals on the card. Now back at home and I am trying to download them to my Mac (OS X 10.10.1 - iPhoto). The card can't seem to be read it appears on the desktop and in the sidebar of iPhoto but then it just says 'loading' and nothing happens. I have also tried Image Capture and Aperture but it's the same no images are being shown. When I open the SD card on the desktop it shows folders but no images but when I do a 'Get Information' it shows 1 GB used. Any thoughts? Thanks

If you have any repair utilities (e.g., DiskWarrior, TechTools Pro), try running them on the SD card.
I'm not 100% certain that an SD card is the type of medium on which these utilities will operate, but worth a try.
On a Mac since 1984. Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

If your regular Mac repair utilities won’t work, there also are a number of SD card file recovery utilities (Google for something like ‘SD card file recovery Mac’) and instructions you can use to attempt data recovery from malfunctioning cards. That said, it may be better to try those card utilities first, as too much futzing around may not increase your chances of success.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion, I found a free subscription to Scandisk RescuePRO this worked fine at recovering them but I'm still slightly confused as to why it happened. The only thing I did differently from the many previous uses was to download them each day onto the iPad (normally they go direct to the MacBookPro and the card is deleted). That little adaptor cost me 29 Euros!

Its like asking why flat tires happen. Sometimes there's a specific cause, but a lot of the time it's just something that happens. SD cards and flash drives seem to encounter data corruption more often thought, probably due to their portability.
