USB Composite Device with Mac Mini

I have a new lab of 2.3Ghz i5 Mac Minis. I'm running Garageband '11 (version 6.0.5) and since the Minis don't have a microphone, I'm exploring some possibilities that don't involve spending $20 per machine (I have 20) for a Logitech USB mic.

I have a box of Labtec AM-242 mics.

I found this: Comodow HY552 USB Composite device

This works for about 30 seconds, then I get some latent noise, which then will clear up, but when I record at that point, there is a one-second delay/echo.

I have experimented with Using both the system output or the output on the device and the results are the same. (I thought perhaps there was a feedback loop somewhere)

The device apparently has some software on it; effects, 5.1 drivers, etc., and I'm thinking that perhaps there is a default setting causing the delay/echo, but I'm not sure how to access them on the Mini.

Any ideas? What else might you need to know to help me troubleshoot this?

Thanks!

As an update to this, and perhaps that others may benefit from what I've found out:
