I periodically print photographs (for elderly parents et cetera) and have always done so using the tools in iPhoto. However, it appears that the recent update to OS 10.6.2 has removed a lot of iPhoto functionality.

I say "appears" to be the OS update because I don't know for sure - due to the fact that my requirement is periodic.

At any rate, the Remove Red Eye function is gone and the printing options have been substantially reduced. Now, there is only one way to print and the results are, well, ka ka. The colour is low chroma (the prints are done very quickly) and there are vertical lines throughout spaced about 3/16" apart.

I assume that going backwards to get to back to an earlier OS is going to be a real pain so perhaps the best bet is to get a reasonably priced application specifically for printing photos.

Any thoughts?

Would Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 suit your needs?

I have latest version of iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 and when I am in edit view there is a Red Eye button between Enhance and Retouch buttons, which are to the left of Effects and Adjust. Am on an intel iMac with 10.6.3

Thanks Jon, but that's a bit more dough than I'd want to spend for something that has only periodic use...probably also "higher end" than my needs so I'd be paying for a bunch of capability I'd never use.

I don't do much in the way of editing the photos - it's really just a need to get reasonably decent prints. I was thinking this might be a good time to spend some money on the folks in the shareware community.

Thanks Mark. Yeah, I used to have the Red Eye in the same place (iPhoto 08) but I now have a very different interface than before. Tell me, do you have a range of printing options or is it a single, fast, low-grade process?

All printing options seem to be the same for me. I very rarely print in iPhoto so I can't say for sure. I am sure you know this but I will ask anyway when you get to the actual print box, is the triangle next to printer facing up or down? Mine is pointing up. If I click on it so it is pointing down I have very few choices.

No, there isn't a triangle in the dialogue box. (Attn: Jon - Honest, cross my heart and spit in a circle - this time there isn't one.)

I just get a simplified interface, much different than previously, that allows:

Selection of printer.
Selection of print mode. Choices are Text, Graphics, Mixed Text and Graphics, Photograph, Line Art
Selection of paper size. Many, many more than before
Selection of print size.
Customize - that brings up a few border and theme options

I note that you don't print from iPhoto which is where I think I need to go, if I can find the right piece of basic software. Using "Photograph" with this new iPhoto interface generates a washed-out, poor quality print.

FYI: I did finally locate the Red Eye removal tool. In this interface it's moved from the previous location and added to Edit.

Ryck,

Take a look at Gimp. The price is right (free!) so you might want to try it.

Thanks Jon...I did look and it appears quite interesting. However, my need has now gone away.

This morning I went back to iPhoto and, when I hit the Print button in the first dialogue box, an entirely new dialogue box popped up that has all the functionality I was looking for. (I assume it's the same thing that Mark gets when he clicks on the triangle in iPhoto 09.) It isn't the way my iPhoto used to present options or tools but it is all the same stuff.

I have no idea what happened. Yesterday, hitting Print took me directly to the minimal print options. Today, it brings up a new dialogue box with everything I want. I haven't changed any preferences, re-installed anything, or used Disk Warrior....nada.

Is that my credibility that's headed down the porcelain facility?

Congratulations. For the record did you restart or shut down your computer or did it just start working. What ever it is, glad it is back in order

Yes and yes. The computer would have been Shutdown at least twice (including once when my wife accessed her account) and iPhoto just starting working. Who knows?? I'm just happy to reap the result.
