So, when I double clich the button, any app I ever launched is running and I suppose using up battery life. I guess I am just not intuitive. I need a three year old to show me how to use this thing.

So, I have App Store running because I launched it, and Safari, and Mail, and Netflix, and a game, and Amazon Movie Viewer, and Pictures, and iTunes and Pinterest, all these apps, show up when I double click on the big button at the bottom at the iPad. I can swipe back and forth and pick a window. But I can't figure out how to make any of these 'go away' so they just show up as icons on my home page and I have fewer things 'open.'If I double-click the button and can swipe between apps, then it means they are all running in the background, right?

What you are seeing the iOS version of apps running in the background. Whether they are active or paused depends on the particular app and to the settings you have for it in the Settings app. To make the apps in background go away simply swipe them UP toward the top of the screen. I clean house like that maybe once a day.

By-the-way in iOS 9 instead of the thumbnails along the bottom of the screen the apps in background they appear as a fan. Functionally no difference but visually pleasing — at least to me.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?
