My wife updated her iPod to IOS8 and now she can't delete mail. An email, when deleted, generates this dialogue.

Unable to move message

The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash.

Clicking on OK causes the email to seem to go to trash. However, a check of Trash does not show the email. Shortly thereafter it reappears in the Inbox.

Trying to get mail to Trash by using the Move function doesn't work either.

Your wife didn't by any chance update iOS 8 to v.8.0.1 (now retracted and replaced with v.8.0.2)? Neither iOS 8.0.1 (nor 8.0 for that matter) is specifically associated with email issues, but inquiring minds like to be sure...

I have had one or two problems like that. In both cases it appeared on the iPhone, iPad, and Mail. The final solution was logging onto the webmail interface for the provider (Google) and deleting it there.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Except, in this case the issue is universal, not just "it". The problem arises with trying to delete any piece of mail in the Inbox, which would make deletions in webmail a royal pain in the hoohaw.

Well, my wife reached a point where she had so many emails clogging her Inbox that she had no choice but to go to webmail and delete from there. That got rid of the unwanted mail.

However, the problem persists. Attempts to delete subsequent emails at the iPod generate the same dialogue box.

Unable to move message

The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash.

I found these two suggestions at an Apple help site:

1. Go to Settings>Mail the mail account in question and turn the account off and then back on

2. Go to Settings>Mail and delete the account and reenter the settings

I tried the first but it did not work. The second seems a bit drastic. It seems to me there should be a less invasive solution.

Assuming it is an IMAP account solution 2 is a piece of cake and you will not lose a thing in the process. I have had to do that on more than one occasion when I was having problems with an account. Just be sure to get a screenshot of the account settings before you delete the account. The password will be preserved in Keychain if you have forgotten it.

If it is a POP account, then all bets are off as you will lose all the data in the account mailboxes. You can however create mail folders "On My Mac" and move the downloaded POP messages there — BEFORE you delete the account.

Thanks joemike....that's good info for any future occurrence. I say 'future' because, as silently as this issue drifted in, it has now gone. Just one of those things sent to try us, I suppose.
