The on/off button on the top of my iPod nano no longer works. It appears to be stuck in the off position.
This nano is the square version with a clip. I've had it for about two years. I can load audio and play it through a radio. I can charge it in a normal fashion or through the radio. I can not play it as an independent device.

Any chance that the on/off button can be repaired, loosened?

Are you within range of a Genius Bar...probably your best bet?

If they can't fix it, I found this place on the internet to put a new battery in my ipod nano second generation:

I like this particular ipod because it held a charge for a long time, having a very small and limited display.

Also, if you do have it under two years, many credit cards automatically double a manufacturer's warranty. In that case, you should contact the credit card company.
