OS 10.6.8 itunes 11.0.1 safari 5.1.7 Since I updated to snow leopard, I cannot use the 'add to library' feature. I was on the internet and some others are having the same problem. It was suggested by one source to download java but another one said not to until apple comes up with a solution? That could take a long time.
Is there any other way to add to my library?
This is in the java prefs: true apple.util.JavaVMInfoGroup@14d964af ...whatever that means. Isn't java supposed to be disabled now or in the near future?

I have the same exact setup, and Add to Library works for me. I can not imagine that it has anything to do with Java at all; iTunes isn't written in Java.

What happens when you use Add to Library? Have you tried not using that command at all, and instead just dragging the files you wish to add into the iTunes window?

Can you just drag the files into the iTunes window? or even just onto the iTunes icon? I often add files to iTunes this way.

tacit beat me to it!

I did try dragging to the window but it wouldn't stay. What I can do is make a playlist, go to file>library>import playlist and see if that will work. I may be able to export it to the library. I will let you know later if okay.
Thanks, jaybass

Just to clarify, is your problem for this one specific file or for any file you try to add?

If the former, what is the file and type?

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

Ira,
This applies to all my itunes. I again googled this problem and many users who updated to 10.6.8 are having the same issue. One guy said he converted the MP3s to aaif and then he could add them to his library. This is true because I tried it myself but who wants to do that everytime. I'm sure apple is aware but are they going to fix it?...and when? How do we know if apple actually intends to do something?
We know they don't answer emails. I downloaded 11.0.1 again but to no avail.
One thing I can do is make up a playlist but as I said I can't transfer it.
Like most of us, our files are MP3s. If you can add anything to resolve my dilemma, please do.

Apple is unlikely to address an iTunes/Snow Leopard issue at this point; Snowy is two OS's behind the times...obsolete. (I'm running into a similar problem with other apps, my 10.6.8 being behind the times and its issues being passe.)

Which version of iTunes were you running when you upgraded to Snowy? (I'm wondering if the iTunes/OS X upgrade sequence may have something to do with your issue.)

Also, do you need iTunes 11 for iOS devices, or can you revert to an earlier version?

(Aside: Converting mp3s to aaifs will increase their file size, possibly by a factor of as much as three or four.)

Artie,
I was using itune 10.6.3 and I am wondering if I can download it over the 11.0.1? I have 2 partitions both of which are for backup but I have only backed up P1 so P2 is still on leopard. I have copied 10.6.3 to my desktop and I'm trying to figure out how to get onto my present HD. Like you, I think the manner in which I updated to S/L has caused this problem. I'm about to try now but if I screw up, I can boot up from P1.

I'm no expert but wonder if this is all related to the problem you had in the other thread with your 10.6.8 update, and maybe you should first try the Combo Update, in case you have some missing bits in Snow Leopard.

I have exactly the same set-up as you: OS 10.6.8, iTunes 11.0.1, and I just did a test with "Add to Library". Worked perfectly.

You could try to go backwards with iTunes but it won't achieve much if Snow Leopard is the problem.

I tried to change 11.0.1 but system wouldn't let me boot up from P1. I will try what you have suggested, download 10.6.8 combo over the top of the present 10.6.8
I'll let you know how it turns out. A strange thing happened yesterday, I converted some downloaded MP3s into aiff and dragged them into the library window and they went okay but although the number of itunes increased by the same amount, the songs were not actually in there...go figure.

Should have asked this before (Jon or artie usually does!) but have you tried this in a test account?

Well, I'm no longer on 10.6 so I'm likely not the best help! But, iirc you go to System Preferences, and then to Accounts, click the + sign at the lower left to make a new account. It doesn't need to be an Admin account, you just want to be able to try out things separate from your usual user account. Once you've made it, log in to it, and see how iTunes functions. It will at least give us more information. smile

Roger,
I did set up another account and could add okay. So I switched back and the existing songs that I had taken out would not go in. I downloaded some new songs and they went in as they should (being MPEG4, bitrate 320) I converted 103 classical itunes a few days ago as they were AACs so I converted them to MP3s using switch. These appeared as m4a's. When I put them into the library, they came out as AACs with a 64 bitrate. I trashed them and added them again and they went in okay but I had to stop the process as they were being converted to AACs again with a 64 bitrate. It seems that the original format will not change if added, but will, if converted before adding. does that make sense? I used to increase the bitrate, but I cannot seem to find a way now. Has something changed with OS 10.6.8?
Well, things are better than they were. I'm wondering if the next update will be of any advantage. What do you think?. Thanks for you reply. jaybass

Click on the iTunes menu and choose Preferences. Then click General and click the Import Settings button. That's where you set your preferred file format and bit rate.

Thanks for that tacit. Virus barrier X6 has notified me of a few viruses which has been repaired. Maybe that had something to do with my itunes problem. Anyway they are working correctly now. Jaybass.
