iPad refuses to recognize mail password

My iPad has decided that my email password is not correct. When I write an email, it says it can't be sent because the password is wrong (it is not).

No matter how many times or places I enter the correct password, iPad says "Nope".

A suggestion I found on-line is to delete the account and start a new one. However, when I start going through that process, iPad warns that deleting the account will remove all the associated data.

Anyone got a better answer?

Your problem is very often server related and may go away on its own.

If your account is an IMAP account, deleting it will NOT remove any data. It will all reappear when you reestablish the account in Mail. If it is a POP account you can move the data to a folder "on my Mac" before deleting the account to conserve the data.

It's IMAP, so I'll proceed.

Well, I'm almost there. My problem now is that not everything got restored to the new account. I had a number of messages that were undelivered but which the Mail app parked in something called "Outbox". I no longer have either an "Outbox" or the messages that were in it.

When there is mail waiting to be sent the mailbox is called Outbox but when all the messages have been sent its name changes to Sent. So your missing messages will probably be found in the Sent mailbox.

I'll take your word (and superior knowledge of the issue) on that one as I don't recall what was sitting in the Outbox.

My wife's iPad Mini was going through the same issue so I did the "delete and open a new account" with it. However, to ensure the Outbox stuff didn't get lost, I first opened each Outbox email and saved them as Drafts - because on my machine the process restored everything in the Draft folder.

It worked fine and she sent everything from the Drafts folder.

That's interesting...suggests a server side, rather than local, glitch.

In retrospect, I was wrong about the Outbox. If the messages are sitting in the Outbox they have not yet been sent to the SMTP server and therefore were lost.

Huh, I would not have expected that. "Outbox" is one of the IMAP boxes and I thought it would get synced?? Maybe it's an exception during syncing?
