The calendar, address book, look like leather journals, it's really tacky. Is there a place to change these settings?

If you are asking whether OS X has "skins" that can be changed like some browsers, the answer is no. Folder icons are relatively easy to change simply by doing a get info on the folder and replacing the icon image with a properly sized graphic image. In fact there are third party apps/utilities that will do that for you.

Application icons on the other hand are embedded in the application package (show package contents > Contents > Resources) usually in a file with the extension .icns which is a file with the icon in several different sizes. Of course rummaging around in the application package carries with it the possibility of irreparably damaging the application itself. In El Capitan (OS X 10.11 even though you might be able to view the package contents, even an administrator may not have write access to the package — a security feature to prevent malware exploits from modifying system or application files.

In later versions of OS X the Calendar icon is a calendar pad showing the current day of the month and not a leather journal. AddressBook changes to Contacts but the icon is still a tabbed book.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

It's so ugly, isn't it. Well, fortunately, don't have to look at them that much. Thanks.
