Since I started using TM a few years back — not only for backups but for reinstallation of my Mac OS X Lion (10.7.5) system and files on a new hard drive — I've noticed what appears to be an anomaly in every backup, namely the warning:
mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume.
Then every backup proceeds to a successful conclusion, ie,
com.apple.backupd: Backup completed successfully.

Any idea what's going on here? It would seem that the error/warning is similar to those Disk Utility Repair Disk Permissions messages that can safely ignored.

A Google search on the error message turned up reports of the error -- several in the Apple Discussions -- going back to the early days of OS X 10.7. Lots of reports but no suggested fixes other than a suggestion to reinstall the "fixed" 10.7.5 update and no firm indication that worked. As far as I could tell the problem is unique to Lion and was fixed in Mountain Lion.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Thanks for the info. I take it then that the "error message" is indeed innocuous and can be ignored (which is what I've been doing all along), given that everything else seems to be OK.

All Ii can say is none of the reports I found indicated any apparent damage to the backup.
