suprious iCloud login prompts

Running Mavericks 10.9.5, every time I reboot I get a prompt to login to iCloud. Whether I enter the correct password or garbage the prompt window reappears until I cancel it twice. iCloud sync with Calendar and Contacts work perfectly. AppleCare's answer is to upgrade to Yosemite -- which I would do only after cloning the hard drive and testing every application (e.g., a pain). Could this be an application causing the prompt, and how would I find out which one needed an application-specific password?
thanks

as a troubleshooting step, you might try opening keychain access and deleting your iCloud keychain entry. (there may be more than one, may even be duplicates) then restart and re-enter and re-save those passwords and see if that clears up the problem.

Before deleting the keychain as V1 suggests, you might try Keychain Access > Keychain Repair and then either Verify or Repair.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Have you replaced any internal hardware lately?

When I had this problem it was because a motherboard was not properly identified.

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

hmm that might happen if a tech replaced the motherboard but didn't update the serial number on the motherboard, and it was set to some generic value. You can look that up under About This Mac

That was exactly my case. The tech never registered a new serial number and it was set to "Not available" under "About This Mac".

How does one identify the motherboard in the Apple System Report?

Many thanks,

When you select Apple, About This mac, the window that pops up will give that information already (10.8'ish and newer)

Serial Number (number here)

if it says "serialnumberser" or something odd after "Serial Number", then it did not get set when the board was replaced. That will interfere with quite a few things, including signing into iCloud and using the app store. You'll have to take it back to the shop to have them finish what they started.

If you go into system report though, select the category header "Hardware" if it's not selected by default. In the list to the right should be a line starting with "Serial Number (system):" which will also display the computer's serial number. (it also may say something defaultish like "serialnumberser" if it's not set)

As Virtual1 says, "finish what they started". It is a very quick and easy process. It does not require opening up your Mac; it is done over wi-fi and takes about a minute.
