I wonder if the price is an attempt to induce stubborn Snowy users (28.2% of the OS X platform as of 1-2013) to upgrade?

I installed Mavericks on my 2009 MacBook this am. The install went fine, however after the reboot the fan was running full blast for minutes until I shut down.

I reset the pram and the fan(s) calmed down. I had to update a couple apps and after a reboot the fans were ramped up again.

A restart in Safe mode stopped the fans, shut down, restart. Fans again. Maybe a third party app is causing the problem? I use Default Folder and Little Snitch.

Anyway, I'm in the process of reverting to my ML clone. I'll wait for 10.9.1

When I had the same problem with my Mac Pro (although it had nothing to do with an update), I solved it by resetting SMC.

Thanks for that. I might give it another try.

I ran the Mavericks installer on a ML partition I have on my Mac Pro. No problems at all. The full screen Finder was sort of neat, but I couldn't discover the tabs I read about. The full screen browser was fun.

Still, I can't see the need to move from my main working partition, which is Snow Leopard.

I have seen several reports of noticeable increases in free disk space following the installation of Mavericks. (The speculation is this is a result of the vastly improved RAM memory management resulting in a dramatic reduction in the need for swapfiles and caches on the HD. Activity Monitor has changed and I haven't gotten enough of a handle on the new information yet to make real comparisons between Mountain Lion and Mavericks memory usage statistics.)

In any event increased disk space and dramatic improvements in memory management should be a fair inducement to change.

I persisted with the Mavericks install on my MacBook. This time, it took. Thanks, John, for the battery tip.

Having played with it for a while, I quite like the full screen appearance of apps and the way they slide in and out of view. Apple always was good at the eye candy.

I think Mavericks on a laptop/notebook is more impressive than on a large screen desktop. I also think my life is too simple to be impressed by all the iCloud/iPhone/iTunes always connected iOS complications that are becoming daily life for many.

It's like rap and hip hop: this software is not really aimed at me.

I also have to wait for Kurt Lang to tell me which fonts I can delete from my System folder!

I have been following this thread even though I cannot install Mavericks on my computer. But, I can post one positive thing: Mavericks offers option to show user Library

I found the easiest way to show the user Library in ML is to (once it's revealed) drag it into the sidebar. Then, it's always there and available.
