I downloaded and installed 10.13.5 via the Combo Updater and all is well.

I updated via Software Update and the App Store, because I couldn't find a combo updater on the downloads page. How did you find your download?

As often happens, a Google search is faster and more productive than searching Apple's website.

I'm at a loss as to how to proceed with this and future updates. I've been installing the deltas and saving the combos for troubleshooting, but in the past few versions of OS X/macOS the OS hasn't allowed me - no way, no how - to run the combo after having upgraded via the delta, so maybe I ought to go straight to the combos from now on? Any thoughts?

@artie505 - Just to confuse things for you – I just ran the combo updater over the delta update without any difficulty.

I had always used the Delta version until 10.13.4. I had received an email from Maintain (developer of Cocktail) that they always recommend the Combo and, since the email provided a link, I decided to use it. To my delight, a problem that I was having with printing calendars from Calendar was solved. The problem had arisen after using the 10.13.3 Delta update.
I don't know if it was actually the Combo that solved it, but I decided to go with the Combo henceforth. My internet connection (via Spectrum) is very fast, so download time is not an issue (and the current Combo downloaded at speeds of 28 MB/s). As far as I can tell, the installation involving the Combo takes about the same time as the Delta.

@artie505 - Just to confuse things for you – I just ran the combo updater over the delta update without any difficulty. I ran the delta, and Installer is allowing me to run the combo; I wonder if it's because no updates have been run over 10.13.5 yet, and the next security update will change things. (I'll try to remember to test and post back.) The thing that makes me hesitate to run the combo is that I THINK the deltas d/l'ed via Software Update are optimized for the Mac to which they're d/l'ed, while the combos (and deltas) dl'ed from Apple's website are generic.

The most recent version is 10.13.6, I believe.

The most recent version is 10.13.6, I believe. That's correct, but it's inconsequential, as the circumstances we're discussing aren't version specific. (Follow the link.) More: I just noticed a typo: " I wonder if it's because no updates have been run over 10.13.5 yet...." should have read 10.13.6.
