I didn't notice it until 24 hours later, but TM failed to back up repeatedly due to error 19 (whatever that is).

At present I'm running Disk Utility on it to repair whatever's going on. It looks as though it'll take at least 6 hours.

Can anyone offer any clues as to what's going on?

How full is your TM drive? I ask because I had a problem with mine when it got too full. I kept getting error messages from Checkmate when it checked the drive, and ultimately, neither Disk Utility nor Disk Warrior could fix it. At Virtual1's suggestion, I nuked the drive and started fresh. No problems since.

Only ca 1/4 used: 252GB used, 748GB free.

Disk Utility advised (after 3 hours of churning) that the volume seemed OK.

I ran a backup, and it seemed to do so successfully.

Now the only anomaly is that the backup icon appears as the generic orange USB device icon, rather than the teal-colored HD disk icon which used to show up. (No idea how to fix that.)
EDIT: Well, I don't have to bother about the latter; it seems to have sorted itself out spontaneously, and it is now the proper TM icon.
