I've just upgraded from Mountain Lion to El Capitan (which is as far as I can go with my iMac) and one of the requirements was the change from iPhoto to Photos. However, the software did not convert all my albums. It kept 2 dozen of them and disregarded about 40 or 50 others.

It appears that all of the photos have been retained but simply in order of the dates. I am not anxious to try and figure out what albums I had and getting the right photos back into them....so I'm looking for an easier fix.

I still have a Super Duper backup (OSX 10.8.5) on a separate drive. Can it be of help?

  1. Were all of your albums in the same iPhoto Library?
  2. Were all of your images consolidated into a single package, typically, ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library or were you drawing images from multiple folders?

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

So, it appears the panic may have been a bit premature. I rebooted from Super Duper to get a complete accounting of albums/folders/nested folders and brought the list back to the El Capitan conversion. After spending some time with the very different interface I figure I got it all.

Now I just need to work my way through adding and filing new material. However, I see there is a columnar sidebar, which I figure Apple threw in for intransigent "sticks in the mud", like me...although, so far, it's not turning out to be as intuitive as I would hope.

And thanks for your thoughtful questions. They pointed me to the answer.
