I have my imac set at 1152 x 720. Many times when I download a picture to use as wallpaper, it ends up being the wrong size. I try to adjust it in the Desktop & Screensaver Windows, but that's when I really know the size won't work. I rarely see my resolution offered, so I download whatever seems closest.
For example, which resolution photo would you downoad for my screen?
I download the largest size available, and then select to "stretch to fill screen". If the screen's dimensions are far enough off to bother me with stretching, I will resize the original a little first so it doesn't get tugged so badly.

My approach would be to find an image size that has the same 16 to10 aspect ratio your screen is set to such as 2880x1800, 2560x1600, 1920x1200, 1680x1050, or 1440x900. Since those are all the same 16x10 aspect ratio they should scale nicely without cropping any edges.
If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?
