After installing 10.7.4 some dock icons disappear

I just installed OSX 10.7.4 over 10.6.8. The dock shows a blank area where only bookmark icons are located. They are still present and function, but there is no visible icon. How do I restore their visibility?

If you got to 10.7.4 via Software Update you (Edit: may have) raun the "Delta" update, in which case running the OS X Lion Update 10.7.4 (Client COMBO) is a good first step.

Edit:Oops! I forgot about the new d/l'able Lion. Even if you got to 10.7.4 in one step, it'll still be a good idea to run the Combo.

This problem has been reported elsewhere with the "spring-shaped" icon for the bookmark becoming invisible. No solution has been presented, but what if you create the bookmarks again under the new System/Safari and use them instead?

On a Mac since 1984.
Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

I tried it and it did not work either. I'm now reinstalling 10.7.4 combo update.

I too have that problem and I used the Combo updater.

No major problem, but still, I hope a fix is near.

What do "bookmarks" have to do with dock "icons"?!
The icons are application aliases in the dock, whereas bookmarks relate to browser URLs.

And, by the way, I downloaded 10.7.4 (manual) and installed it (over 10.7.3) with no issues.

If you drag a URL (from, say, your browser's address bar) and drop it into the right side of your Dock (being careful not to deposit in any folder residing there, or in the Trash), you'll notice it turn into the "spring-shaped" icon Ira refers to above.

Future clicking on this icon will open the URL in your default browser. Hence JoBoy's reference to "bookmark icons."

Ah so. I don't remember seeing that possibility in Pogue's Missing Manual, only programs and documents.

I just tried it and got the same result, namely a blank space (ie, no "spring-shaped" or any other icon) which shows the URL when the cursor is placed over it. But it makes me no-never-mind* since I can't think of any reason I might do it (other than out of curiosity).

It's very obscure, but there is one lonely line on page 754 of Pogue's Snow Leopard version at the bottom of the last "Tip:" shown there:

"Better yet, stash a few of these icons in your Dock or Sidebar for even easier access."

I use it for things I use repeatedly like the postal service's Zip Code lookup, National Weather Service, Wikipedia, Google Advanced Search, etc. Click it in the Dock and it opens Safari as well as the page. Obviously, there are other ways to do this, but I find it to be an easy one-click way when my screen is filled with other stuff.

A posting at Macintouch has a possible cause and solution. It says:

However, it is unique to 10.7.4. The url.png is missing from Dock.app.
Extract the Dock.app from the 10.7.3 or earlier update using Pacifist and drag that png file into place. Final step is to ensure it has the proper permissions. That's done with this Terminal command:
sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/url.png

Admittedly a little short on many of the "how-to" steps, but perhaps someone can try it and give more details.

I have a copy of 10.7.3 lying about, and could go the route suggested (I suppose), but since the advent of Reading List, I no longer use this feature.

Well, that, plus I presume some clever chap will soon post a script or some such that does what's needed. And of course, I prefer to wait until this technique has been well tested.

Still, it might be fun just to see if it works...

Are you suggesting that posting such a solution is beyond the ability of chapettes, Harv? shocked

Never! It's just that I so often use the term chapettes, I find that I even bore myself, and fear that the enlightened readers here 'bouts will conclude I but aspire to the mundane.

Same way I feel about "se" and "hir."

The idea of political correctness being considered mundane is, however, amusing.

Assuming you're running Time Machine (and if not, why not?) you can restore the missing file from the last time it was backed up (back when you were last on 10.7.3) with the following script.

You must be running as an admin, but only because you need root privileges to restore files into /System. If the missing file were one of your own, you could leave out the one use of sudo.

This script also presumes your TM backup volume is mounted. I don't have a Time Capsule, and can't test what happens in that case. (It's my understanding, although I could be wrong, that with a Time Capsule the backup volume is mounted only temporarily, when TM needs it.)

Code:
# First, identify the file to be restored
FYL=/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/url.png

# Don't bother restoring it if it's already present
if [[ -e "$FYL" ]]; then echo $(basename "$FYL") is already installed
else

    # Get the name of your machine's TM backup
    TM=$(tmutil machinedirectory)

    # Get the name of your machine's boot volume
    DSK=$(find -x /Volumes -type l -exec basename {} \;)

    # Find the last time that file was backed up from your boot volume
    SRC=$(ls "$TM"/*/"$DSK$FYL" | tail -1)

    # restore it
    sudo tmutil restore "$SRC" "$FYL"

    # In this special case, because the restored file needs to be noticed by Dock,
    # get Dock's attention
    osascript -e 'tell application "Dock" to quit'
fi
