Sometimes you see or hear of something that is so unbelievable you can only scratch your head and keep on walking. Voting for Trump could mean a death sentence, but they'd do it again.

People will consistently vote against their self-interests if the candidate (at any level) matches their own beliefs (whether liberal, conservative, etc.) on "GIGA": guns, immigration, gays, abortion.
Cognitive psychologists have hypothesized that in the case of #45, his supporters further identify with him as a family member/father figure, even if they are dirt broke; it's not an economic identification, it is family values. Consequently, to break that support it must be shown that "father" is a loser, has lied and has betrayed them.
It may seem obvious to many that these three actions have occurred, but family ties are strong and very convincing and repeated arguments must be made to result in the rejection of a family member.
Just my nickel's worth of opinion.
On a Mac since 1984. Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

That's why, for example, dogs (or humans or ...) that are beaten or otherwise abused consistently 'forgive' their owners (or parents/caregivers or ...). It has a lot in common with Stockholm syndrome.
