For a more personal (in-depth?) perspective, consider Thomas L. Friedman's
From Beirut to Jerusalem. He was a weekly columnist for the New York
Times.
When the book went into paperback he added an epilogue with an update for the current situation.
My synopsis of his perspective on a solution to the Middle East crisis would be "Forget it! Both sides are too tribal and will only trust immediate family members and maybe, just maybe, members of their tribe. Outside of their tribe--no trust."
