The day of the Kentucky Derby is a good day to ponder American Pharoah , one year after he made history there and now at stud with his owner collecting a $200,000 fee per engagement.

Treated like real royalty, American Pharoah is covering up to three mares per day. It's only a hunch, but I'm guessing he doesn't miss the track.

Having worked on a thoroughbred stud farm for a few years I know that covering three mares a day will quickly result in a very low sperm count and an exhausted stud. The average is more like one a day to five a week. The breeding season only lasts about three months, so there is a 9 month "vacation" to recover from all the activity in the season.

So, it would appear the sports reporter I watched had a poor source for information. However, all that being said….still not a bad retirement plan.
