The next time my vegetarian friends give me the old "Tsk Tsk" for the steak I am about to consume, I think I'll quote these data from Reuters:

A third of vegetarians admit to eating meat every time they get drunk, according to a U.K. survey. Two in five of 1,789 vegetarians questioned owned up to treating themselves to a sneaky kebab after a few drinks. And one in three said they indulged in meat every time they went out drinking. 27% of the lapsing veggies said they ate bacon, while 19% opted for fried chicken and 14% confessed to munching on sausages.

When I was growing up in Brooklyn, it was a common joke among us Jews that it is forbidden to eat shrimp except in a Chinese restaurant.

I was told you could tell if a neighborhood was Jewish by how many Chinese restaurants there were.

I'm not a vegetarian because I love animals; I'm a vegetarian because I hate plants. grin

I don't think any neighborhood had more than one, because there's a limit to how many restaurants 6 hours a week of business can support.

Edit: Chinese restaurants were pretty much exclusively for Sunday dinner.

I've always justified being a carnivore with the argument that animals have a chance to run away when you come to eat them. On the other hand plants, being rooted to the ground, are completely defenceless. Seems hardly fair to eat them.

The latest episode of The Goldbergs is definitive on the subject.

I haven't got a TV; please clarify.

Thanks.

The Goldbergs is a sit-com — now in its third year — which re-creates Adam Goldberg's childhood and adolescent penchant for filming family antics in the 1980s.
Apparently the video of the December 9th episode (to which I referred) can be viewed at A Christmas Story.
The visual punchline is the overhead view of a Jewish and a Christian family sharing Christmas dinner at a local Chinese restaurant — (very tenuous) shades of Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), a classic from yesteryear directed by Ang Lee.

If my memory serves me, the last time a TV was turned on in my house was for the "No mas" fight in 1980.

I kept the TV around for another 10 years or so, but never turned it on again.

I killed my TV several years ago. I had Time Warner Cable and was paying an exorbitant monthly fee for programs that I never watched. After I realized that I typically turned the TV off after one minute (and most programs were inane, commercialized, or insulting to my intelligence), I figured that I was wasting my money. My wife had stopped watching way before that (she's much smarter than I, although I can't figure out why, with her IQ, she married me).

Now, my only relationship with TWC is subscribing to their Road Runner internet service (which, BTW, I am happy with).

I also have no TV. For Christmas last year, my parents got me a top-of-the-line XBox One video game console, which has been gathering dust unopened on the shelf because I have no TV to plug it in to.

Didn't you post (quite?) a while back that you had bought a TV...maybe something to do with your new couch?

Yes, I did finally settle on an LG. Then I ended up with a second back surgery, the bracket hadn't been put up yet, Dr told me not to use power tools again for awhile, yada yada yada so it went back.

I'm certainly sympathetic; my back isn't particularly bad, but even when it's only sore it's a nightmare. I wouldn't want to live with what you've been living.

I dunno if it's officially verboten, but it distracts from the original topic and makes the new one a bit more difficult to find in a search.
