I'd noticed this before but it just hit me, most hit results in Google used to have a little blue "cached copy" link below them you could click on to see what it looked like when google hit it, which was useful for pages that were no longer there.

But all the hits in Google now don't have that on them anymore. Did something change recently? or maybe a privacy/data retention issue?

The cached pages are still 'there', but the links have moved to Instant Preview. Get the details from the horse's mouth...

You're not the only one thinking that. I just wonder what Google was thinking when they made that change early this summer.

They were thinking, "Hey! We wrote the book on changing things that work well and that people like and are comfortable with just for the sake of changing things. But now Facebook is stealing our thunder! Must be time for another change! tongue

It's pretty revealing that the answer provided in the thread you linked to included the phrase "...our efforts to provide a clean and simple redesign of the search results page..."

What on earth could have been cleaner and simpler than the original design of the search results page? IMO, it's become more distraction-plagued and confusing at every reiteration...

I'm not certain that it addresses all the changes Google has made to its search results windows, but oldschoogle certainly helps.

But will they ever surpass ESPN's promise of "Tomorrow's news today?"
