Sources detail changes to Snow Leopard installation process lists some major changes in the way the new OS will be installed.

That's handy!

The two that stuck out for me are:

1) Quicktime 7 optional. If 10.6 includes Quicktime X, does that means QT7 and QTX can coexist or that QT7 users are choosing to downgrade (for pro app compatibility, presumably) and not getting QT X?

2a) Reinstallation doesn't affect the version number, e.g. reinstalling 10.6 on top of 10.6.1 keeps it 10.6.1, not overwriting upgraded components. But what if you are reinstalling because of a corrupt component? Why wouldn't you want to replace that fresh?

2b) Because of 2a, "Previous System Folder" will no longer be saved. Again, same question re fresh component install.

I apologize for a likely-repeated question, but 10.6 is Intel only, correct?

If you've got a corrupt component, wouldn't you re-run the update before reinstalling OS X?

Also, "However, "Erase and Install" remains available through Disk Utility, which is also included on the installation DVD."

If 10.6 is an upgrade, erase and install is going to be a complicated process, no?

And "If you need to reinstall 10.6, it automatically archives and installs for you."

There is no "Previous System" folder at the root level after reinstalling.

What, then, is being archived?

Another problem is involved with this. Suppose that you you updated to 10.6.2 but wanted to revert to 10.6.1? How could you do this short of running E&I?

Word on the street is that Snow Leopard is sooo good that Apple doesn't really expect to ever need a 10.6.1 update let alone a 10.6.2!

Excellent point!!! (It seems like Apple has now decreed that everybody must have a Time Capsule? At the very least, it sounds like everybody with any sense *must* maintain some sort of backup.)

I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the disc, itself, tells us.

While this may very well be the case—Apple does thrive on introducing artificial software limitations which can be overcome by the purchase of new hardware—I'm not sure I'd conclude that on the basis of AppleInsider's interpretation of what "[p]eople familiar with Apple's upcoming Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard operating system" have to say.

Something sure seems a little wonky about the reported reinstallation procedures as outlined in the article.

That's why I said "I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the disc, itself, tells us."

You're right; something just doesn't ring true.
