If you have ever been curious about that it takes for an iPhone to respond to "Hey SIRI" this article explains it all.
If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

If I recall, the iDevice needs to be plugged in to make this command work. That seems to make it less practical for most perhaps, except in some middle-of-the-night emergency situation.
The article is still a good explanation of the underlying process.
On a Mac since 1984. Currently: 24" M1 iMac, M2 Pro Mac mini with 27" BenQ monitor, M2 Macbook Air, MacOS 14.x; iPhones, iPods (yes, still) and iPads.

The article is still a good explanation of the underlying process. The iDevice does NOT have to be plugged in, but it does require internet access.

If you have an iPhone 6s or later, or an iPad Pro*, you can use "Hey Siri" whenever you want. If you have an iPhone 6 or earlier, or another iPad or iPod touch model, you need to plug your device into power first.[emphasis added]
