Ever since FineTunedMac went live I have always been automatically logged in when I return to the site, that is until the last couple of days. Now every time I access the site I have to manually log in. Safari "remembers" my userid and password so that is not the problem. Before I spend a lot of time rummaging around trying to figure out what has changed on my Mac I thought I would check and see if anyone else is encountering a similar problem.
If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

I logged in the first time I visited FTM and never again.

I have never been able to use automatic log-in, although I've never checked to see if my attempt to set it up was correct.
At log-in I check off the "Remember me on each visit" button but always seem to be forgotten. Since you were asking, I just did a few tests logging in and out, and going to other sites in between, but the results were the same.
Although I checked off the "Remember me on each visit" button, I had to log-in manually.

Interesting. I too remain logged in by default, but had to log in again last Sunday. At the time I attributed that to my purging of various caches immediately preceding the login request, but now I'm not so sure. Fortunately Safari/keychain remembered the details.

Once in awhile, I purge all cookies. This means that I have to log in again. Your problem has not arisen for me and I wonder if clearing cookies might solve it for you? Just a thought.

I have never been able to use automatic log-in... I think there's a mistaken impression that the Forums software offers such an option—an impression furthered, perhaps, by joemikeb's choice of words ("I have always been automatically logged in when I return to the site"). Joe probably would have been more accurate had he said, "I have always still been logged in when I return to the site." Leaving the site does not log one out automatically; that needs to be done manually, as well. (I note that you do manually log out, which is why you never find yourself logged in when you return.) For me in Safari 5.0 (OS X 10.5.8), checking the Remember me on each visit checkbox has no discernible effect on the login process; the Username and Password fields on the login page are always prefilled, regardless of what I do with that checkbox and regardless of my cookie settings. Only by editing Usernames and passwords in Safari -> Preferences -> AutoFill to remove the finetunedmac entry can I restore blank login fields. (I should note that if you decline Safari's offer to automatically fill these fields on your initial visit by clicking the Never for this website button, the fields will remain blank unless you remove that same finetunedmac entry, which in that case is there to enforce the "DON'T save" behavior.)

Cookie expiration is set at 30758400 seconds, which if I did the math correctly works out to 356 days.
Joe and alter and Jay-bird, my best guess is that your original cookies expired, requiring you to log in again. (Alter, purging caches should have no effect on your FTM login state.)
Joe, not sure why you have to keep logging in. Are you checking the "Remember me on each visit." box? If so, I second Jon's suggestion to delete your FTM cookies and start fresh.

Well, despite my login setting to remember me I just had to log in again, suggesting that we may not be dealing with just the annual cookie expiration. (This notion is supported by my ubbt_x cookie, which is set to expire 07/18/11: the previous date is close, but off by over a week). Anyway, I'll toss mine, and see what happens.

I've got doubles of some cookies (maybe 'cause I haven't restarted Firefox since before the UBBT 7.5.5 update?) so not sure how representative my experience will be, but I've got a ubbt_key and a ubbt_myid cookie due to expire tomorrow.
Interestingly, though it's in Firefox's list of cookies, ubbt_x isn't shown in My Stuff > Cookies. Same thing with Camino and a different account. Don't know what that's about, but seems that cookie isn't login related. FWIW, though, the expiration date on my ubbt_x is July 12, 2011.

Jay-bird, which browser are you using? What FTM cookies do you have and what are their expiration dates?

My relevant cookies in Firefox and Camino are for either www.finetunedmac.com or finetunedmac.com. Don't have any "ftm" cookies and don't know if yours is related to FineTunedMac or not. You could upload the screenshot to one of the sites dianne listed in Re: New Screenshot site needed and then post the URL here. But if you don't want to go that route or copy/paste the cookie info, don't worry about it...while the details might help us pinpoint why people are having to log in repeatedly, I'm pretty sure the solution is going to be the same regardless: delete all FineTunedMac cookies and log in again, making sure to check the "Remember me" box. That clean slate has done the trick for me in testing in Camino, anyway. Yesterday I noted that 2 of my Firefox FineTunedMac cookies were due to expire today. Specifically, the expiration time shown was July 28, 2010 1:48:59 PM. I had a Who's Online page open in advance, and when it reloaded at 1:49 PM I'd become logged out. As an experiment I didn't clear out any cookies and just logged in again with the "Remember me" box checked. Will see if I stay logged in or not.

For what it's worth, I'm using Safari 5 and have not had any issues where I go to the forum and I'm not logged in.

Once in awhile, I purge all cookies... I am also a 'periodic' cookie purger. i.e. there's no set frequency, it's done whenever the thought crosses my mind - perhaps once a year. However I see, from dkmarsh's response, I have misunderstood what the "Remember me on each visit" meant. ryck

I have never been able to use automatic log-in... I think there's a mistaken impression that the Forums software offers such an option... You are correct, that is what I thought. However, I've just logged out and revised my Safari Preferences (Safari 5, OS 10.6.4). The "User name and passwords" was not checked off. It now works as expected. However, looking the Safari Autofill preferences "Other forms" raises a concern (the number of names listed there) but, as it's off-topic, I'll start a new thread in another forum. ryck
