I was editing my profile and saw that the password listed (and confirmed) is not my login password. I know that the login password works because I used it just a few days ago to log in. I can easily read the one at the Edit Profile page because I use the ShowPass extension in Safari.

What is that spurious password about? To say the least, it's not secure (and I won't type it here).

My FTM password is 8 characters, and it shows as 18 dots, so I guess it's some kind of security feature?

It's just a placeholder value, as can be seen by examining the page source:

<label for="ChosenPassword">Password: (between 4 and 20 characters)</label>
<br />
<input type="password" name="ChosenPassword" id="ChosenPassword"
value="123456789123456789" class="form-input" autocomplete="off" />
<br />
<br />

<label for="Verify">Verify Password: (Re-type your password here in order for the change to take place.)</label>
<br />
<input type="password" name="Verify" id="Verify"
value="123456789123456789" class="form-input" />
<br />

Yep, that's correct. It's designed so that someone looking over your shoulder can not tell how many characters are in your password.
