Please be very much more specific.

We'd like to help you, but before we can we must know precisely what your problem is...
  • What are you backing up?
  • What tool are you using to back it up?
  • Precisely what have you set your tool up to do?
  • (Edit:)What is it doing that's unexpected?
  • Etc.

Lets add toe Artie's list,

  • What version of OS X are you using?

Petsider,

Since no one has replied, and you have a not responded to requests for as more Information, I thought I might take a crack at answering your question. No matter what backup utility you use, you have to back up to some other media such as another hard drive, MobileMe, memory sticks, or optical discs (CD/DVD). So the answer to your is a YES qualified by which particular backup device option you choose. Backing up to the same volume or drive is relatively pointless as you will most likely need the a backup in the event the volume gets trashed or the drive fails this destroying both the original and backup at the same time.

Time Machine assumes the use of a second hard drive.
