Over the past week, some people (but not everyone) have been affected by a database latency issue that sometimes makes FTM slow to load. The problem seems to have been resolved; at least, I'm not seeing it any more. If anyone is still experiencing forum slowdowns, please let me know!

Thanks... so far so good (Thu Mar 18 00:40:25 EDT 2010).

EDIT: hmm, well *posting* this took 16 seconds after clicking the 'Submit' button. It's okay i guess.

Better, tacit, but still not back to where it had been. (18th/3 AM EDT)

I may have been among the "but not everyone" as I haven't had any experience that would cause me to take note. And I 'm just providing this response to give to a "Submit time", in case it's helpful.

Edit: Time from "Submit" to being returned to the forum, just 5 seconds.

I'd estimate that over the past week or so, I've experienced delayed server response about 25-30% of the time. Unlike the problems in the early days, though, the current delays rarely last as long as, say, half a minute; usually more like ten seconds, give or take.

I should emphasize that the problems I see are not page-loading times; once the server responds, pages load as quickly as ever. It's the wait for the initial response which is where I experience the delays.

FWIW, my experience is similar to Dave's: during the past week or two I'd regularly encounter noticeable delays in page opening as well as timeouts. In some cases my impatience led me to hit the reload button before Safari timed out on the (still) empty page, whereupon the requested content materialized instantly. Most (but not all) pages loaded promptly when I reloaded timed-out pages. I haven't seen any such delays or timeouts since yesterday.

I'm seeing the slowdowns again, too, and have a call in to the Web hosting tech support about it. If the problem persists, I may have no choice but to find another Web host.

For the past two days, everything has been good. The FTM Forums page loads very quickly. Let's hope that the problem is solved.

EDIT: Perhaps I spoke too soon. FTM seems OK now but a few hours ago, I got a message that the URL could not be found.

Hope it was a fluke. It's been smooth as butter for me the past several days.

For me as well, despite my other problem.

Hmm. Your problem may have been either temporary or local/regional, as I haven't (yet) noticed anything untoward today.

It's now 1:28 AM on the 18th, and all seems to be OK (...fingers crossed).

Safari timed out repeatedly this morning at around 6:30-7:00 am EDT when I tried to (re)load an Active Posts page. No response from the server at all, judging by the activity lights on my router and modem.

Excessive antipodal demand? smirk Right now things appear normal in my neck of the woods. Still, I occasionally see the transiently slow (up to 20-30 seconds) response, but not in the last several days.

Part of that unresponsiveness may be related to a denial of service attack that's been going on against Fine Tuned Mac intermittently for the last few days. It's happening tonight as I type this, in fact.

If you experience forum slowness and/or failure to load, but when the page does load the "generated in ___ seconds" tag at the bottom of the page shows a low number, it's probably the fact that the site is being attacked rather than a database issue.

I'm not sure who's attacking us or why. We probably won't ever know, in fact.

Thanks for explaining that peculiarity; I've noticed it for more than just the past few days days...more likely a week, if not more, and please don't ask me why I didn't post. blush

RE denial of service attack

How rude and puerile!

Whatever is the point?! It's like taggers violating private property — mindless. The perpetrators (or should that be: pertraitors?) need tp get a life, because the one they have indicates that they are — in the words of the sage — a waste of skin and air.
A-holes.

And, by the bye, I haven't noticed a slowdown over the past week.

Sorry, but this has been the slowest loading site of any that I have visited for several weeks now. It's not been to the point that I decide to forget it and close out, but it has come close.

Interesting...while I've encountered periods of slow loading off and on since FTM opened I haven't seen the problem in at least a week.

Don't know why our experiences are so different but in case you haven't seen tacit's post, changes are coming this weekend that should put this issue behind us: FineTunedMac is changing servers!

For me, over the last weekend it's been really hard to get to FTM's forums, quite often connecting attempts took 40+ seconds or just timed out.
But I always could reach the main page "www.finetunedmac.com", even if I forced my browser to load the original one (not a cached).
It was only any "www.finetunedmac.com/forums/*" that took very long or failed.
Looks to me more like a database related problem than a DoS attack.

FWIW, I've had no delays or any other problems accessing FTM forums over the past several weeks.
