Superduper now can back up from Time Machine after the new upgrade, to an external disk. Unfortunately after preparation, it quit. I sent the report to shirt pocket to find out why.

This is something that could not be done before. This will make retrieving data much easier than the convoluted procedure using time machine backup. I will let you know what shirt pocket has to say.

I was not clear on what you meant by "back up from Time Machine" so I went to the Super Duper web site. What it says there is that the software is "the perfect complement to Time Machine, allowing you to store a bootable backup alongside your Time Machine volume". So it is a backup independent of Time Machine and has nothing to do with Time Machine.

Given what others have said on this site (FTM), I still can't believe that it makes a bootable clone. I look forward to hearing more of your experiences with SuperDuper.

I thought I could copy Time Machine's back up but I could not. When I opened up SuperDuper, the window showed 'copy HD to backup #7' (one of my external drives) I never expected it but it did just that and
afterwards after checking, I had everything on my thumb drive!! This will make a big difference to a lot of Mac users. I'm beginning to wonder if Time machine is necessary.

But the problem remains regarding my documents, not being able to open them remains to be resolved. Any ideas Ira?

Were you able to successfully boot that cone on backup #7?

Time Machine is unnecessary in my situation, but for others it remains an excellent resource, because it's a "perpetual motion" backup, i.e. backing up at whatever interval you set from minutes to days, as opposed to SD! clones that aren't updated frequently.

I've kinda lost track of your documents issue, but if you've got your Time Machine drive back on line, have you tried running Migration Assistant to see if you can restore them from there? I don't think I'd advise trying it with your current boot volume, but it may work with your external SD! backup or, if not, with a new clone on a separate partition on your internal HD (which will be bootable).

CORRECTION! Re my backup, not a thumb drive of course, but a Lacie external drive.

Back up #7 is perfect. I will back up once a week like I used to on Sierra. I will not bother with Time machine after what happened today. The day before yesterday a lady from apple retrieved my documents using Time Machine back up but as I said before, she had signed off before I knew that I could not open any of them ( over 200 ) Today I phoned apple again and another lady after over an hour said that my documents could not be retrieved. She said to delete them. She said that something happened when Time Machine was backing up my HD resulting in inaccessible documents. What, nobody knows.
I wondered why no-one from this forum hadn't answered my problem. There is the issue about the file server, where does one find it? Not that I expect to need it down the road.
As far as using the Migration Assistant, considering that the apple agent couldn't help me, it's a moot point.
