Hope I picked the right forum (thought that me being 10.6 might provide admittance)....feel free to move, if not. My daughter has two Macs. One is a G4 (AGP Graphics). I believe it's the 350 processor. She also has an Intel MacBook (1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo) running OSX 10.5.8. She'd like to get rid of the G4 this weekend (Translation: stash it in my attic) and has asked if she'd be able to transfer files when she gets here. She won't be bringing the monitor so I thought "Target Disk". However, I'm now not certain that that will work. Am I right or wrong? If it won't work in target is there any other way to get the G4 to see either her MacBook or my iMac (2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) running 10.6.5 ryck Update: I may have found the answer here although I still have a question.
The instructions talk about firmware and software being up to date. I'm pretty sure the firmware is fine (the G4 used to be mine) but I'm not certain about the OS. I can't check with her right now as she's unavailable, so I'll just ask: "Suppose the G4 OS is not the latest version...will that be a show-stopper, or just affect transfer performance?"

I had had a G4 Gigabit Ethernet (dual 450 MHz), similar to your AGP Graphics. It was running 10.4.11 with all firmware updates applied and it had no problem booting into Target Disk Mode and migrating data to my new Mac Pro.

Thanks Jon. I figured I'd probably be okay but just thought it's good to check.

Not sure specifically where, but right around there is where firewire target disk mode was added to the firmware. It may only support the master boot drive, not slave drives or the optical drive.
If it's not available for your firmware, you'll need to remove the hdd and do a "from another volume on this computer" and plug it into the usb/firewire. I keep one of those generic ide/sata to USB adapters in my laptop bag for just such an occasion.

It may only support the master boot drive, not slave drives or the optical drive. That is correct. When I had the Gigabit Ethernet, I was using the slave drive as the default startup disk (the master was a clone). Before migrating to the Mac Pro, I made sure that the (master drive) clone was up to date because I knew that the migration would be from there.

I keep one of those generic ide/sata to USB adapters in my laptop bag for just such an occasion. Well, there is no joy in Mudville tonight. I tried everything I could think of but the G4 was not cooperating as a Target Drive. I assume the G4 system was not fully up to date. My daughter has since left and the G4 is still here (no monitor) so I'll probably have to pop the drives out. Do you have a particular adapter that you like better than others? What about pins? I checked the Apple specs site and the drives are described as ATA-66 or SCSI. Does an adapter that's "generic" fit all? Thanks ryck

you will have a very hard time finding a service adapter to go from scsi to anything else. IDE is about the only common parallel interface to have serial conversion chips. (to sata, usb, firewire, etc, serial interfaces) There are dozens of companies making IDE and Sata to USB adapters nowadays. look at thisit's similar to what I carry with me. I've also been unable to find a sata to firewire adapter of any sort. And every attempt I've made to stack two adapters together (such as sata to ide, and then ide to firewire) has failed.

Can borrow a monitor for long enough to install ScreenRecycler?

Seems to me that ScreenRecycler is the opposite of what ryck needs—it would allow him to use another Mac's monitor as an additional display: "If you own two computers with separate screens you can use ScreenRecycler....Many Mac users have a second computer sitting right next to their main computer on their desk including a nice display. ScreenRecycler now enables you to use this spare computer as a second display for your Mac...Use any machine as an additional monitor for your Mac !"And in any case, ScreenRecycler needs the two Macs to be networked; if they are, then the problem is already solved without any additional software, via standard Ethernet file sharing. In fact, my original thought regarding ryck's question was to connect the two Macs with an Ethernet crossover cable and transfer files that way; I didn't make the suggestion only because a monitor would be required to enable file sharing on his daughter's computer. If a monitor can be borrowed, why not simply use it to do that?

I was just reacting to "the G4 is still here (no monitor)."

ScreenRecycler would require only an extremely short term loan rather than a possible "long" one.

ScreenRecycler would require only an extremely short term loan rather than a possible "long" one. My point was that ScreenRecycler would require networking the two Macs, which means connecting them to each other and using the borrowed monitor to enable file sharing on the "headless" machine. Once they're connected and file sharing is enabled, there's no reason to use ScreenRecycler at all.

If it's not available for your firmware, you'll need to remove the hdd and do a "from another volume on this computer" and plug it into the usb/firewire. I keep one of those generic ide/sata to USB adapters in my laptop bag for just such an occasion. I have the OWC Universal Drive Adapter (USB 2.0). When I hooked up to the non-system drive HD of the G4, everything was fine. I got the Orange Disk icon on the desktop and could transfer files. The drive with the system is another story. I have the Blue power light and the Red IDE/ATA light but the drive is not appearing on the desktop. The drive is running. The USB is connected directly to my iMac running OSX 10.6.6. I have gone through the OWC suggestions about connecting and reconnecting without results. I unplugged and replugged the USB connector and, on replugging, got this message "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer". I opened Disk Warrior, while the drive was wound down, and the drive started. DW took a fair amount of time but, in the end, did not see the drive. I then used Disk Utility and it could see the drive. The DW box showed the drive as the Orange Icon with the Firewire symbol and provided disk size et cetera. However, none of the First Aid functions are available (Verify permissions, Verify Disk, et cetera). Could it be whether the drive is set to Master? That's the one thing that's not clear to me at this point. The pins, where I think the jumper should be, don't have any jumper. The other drive (that does appear on the desktop) has a jumper. The drive I can't see on the desktop is a Seagate Model ST3408 10A. Any direction would be appreciated. ryck

Hello Administrators:
Although I picked up the original thread, because this "turn" in it differs a lot from the original question about Target Disk Mode, maybe the last post should be moved and become a new thread.
Better Titles might be: Universal Drive Adapter Query OR UDA Doesn't See Hard Drive
Your call.

I think it's good here as a continuation of the quest to get at the G4's files.

PIN UPDATE: There are 8 pins on the Seagate and their site has them numbered as (L to R) 7 5 3 1 over 8 6 4 2, and says that the jumper for Master Drive would be 7 & 8.
The original Apple HD has 10 pins and there's a jumper on the middle pair, so I'm assuming that'd be 5 & 6.
I don't know the make of the original drive as I'm doing this without removing them - it just looks like it'd be such a pain in the.......

We have lift-off.
My curiosity got the better of me so I went to a local computer store (that deals in those "other" computers) and they gave me a jumper. I popped it on pins 7&8 and I can now see the drive on the iMac desktop.
Ironically, my daughter only kept system stuff on this drive and all her files on the other - so, if I never saw this drive, it wouldn't matter. However, I am now better educated and have a terrific tool.
Thanks, virtual1, for the UDA recommendation.
