OS 10.5.8
I tried to play an AVI clip but a window popped up asking me where quicktime player is. I have downloaded quicktime766_Leopard.pkg twice but it does show not in the apps under system profiler. I seem to have 'lost' quicktime as it disappeared from the dock and I'm wondering if downloading 766 is the correct way to go. Do I need a previous version before downloading 766? I tried to do a custom install but quicktime isn't an option.
Any ideas please. jaybass

You say you downloaded QT 766, but that it won't show up. Assuming you actually installed it after downloading, what if anything happened with the installation? Were there any error (or success) messages? If you run a search for QT, what's the result?

I'm not sure it will reinstall missing QT components, but you could try and run the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo installer.

Forgive me if this questions seems too obvious, but after downloading, what did you do? I downloaded quicktime766_Leopard.dmg, then double-clicked it; after a short delay, the disk image mounted, and a window opened showing its contents—quicktime766_Leopard.pkg. Double-clicking that opened OS X's Installer application, which led me through the installation step by step.

As far as I know, QuickTime 7.6.6 is complete and doesn't require a previous version to be installed, but I can't speak from personal experience, and I'm disinclined to experiment to confirm that. wink

I ran spotlight and it gave QT766 as being in apps ie the pkg icon which went through the motions of installing. It did not show in the system profiler apps.
I have since trashed everything QT766 and downloaded QT 764 but when I tried to install it, a message said I couldn't because a newer version was already installed. When I tried to empty the trash re 766 version, another message said I could not because DivXDecoder
is in use (what is that? spotlight couldn't find it)
Spotlight found no results for QT766. I have just found the QT folder with that decoder inside, it's on my desktop now. Where should that be now?
I cannot find anything else pertaining to QT766 to trash.
I tried all the libraries. Where should I go from here?

- Based on your description it looks like you did not install QT 766, but merely dragged the installer package into your Apps folder. That would also explain its absence in SP's listing.

- I don't have a folder like yours with the DivXDecoder, and I suspect it's a custom install, possibly related to QT's internet browser plugins. Regardless of what it is, I cannot say where it's supposed to go, but I wouldn't worry about it and leave it where it is, for now.

- I'd not continue to uninstall any more, but download and install QT 766 as per DK's description. You should wind up with a copy of QT Player in your Apps folder, and if you see that there QT would likely be listed by System Profiler as well. I suggest you try this first and report back with the results.

I trashed QT764 and downloaded QT766.
I clicked the pkg and went through the installing and then had to restart, just like before. spotlight gave the top hit as users-jondan-downloads, just the dmg. The pkg is in the docs, path, Volumes/QT for Leopard 766.
That folder I mentioned belongs in the HD library.
The QT plugin folder, path, jondan/library/internet plugins.
Trouble is, that when I opened the plugin folder, it was empty.
Could that be the problem? If so how do I get it?

It sure looks like there is a problem (re)installing Quicktime under Leopard, at least in certain (as yet unspecified) configurations. I have not been able to find a workaround other than using Pacifist, but at least that's available. It's going to be interesting to see if Apple will respond to the issue.

Today I installed Pacifist and after a few errors managed to install QT766
I am really pleased I stumbled upon that particular forum.

Thank you everyone for your help.
