Have you tried the keyboard shortcut, namely Command-W? Since I haven't had this issue, I can't test it.
Does this happen consistently with a particular URL? If so, please post the URL so that we can experiment.

You can't force quit a window; you can only force quit a program. When you force quit a program, all its windows close.

thanks, sorry for delay, yes I force quit the app and have to relaunch. I don't have a consistent url to test either.
So question remains,
In Safari -- or Firefox
if you have ten windows up, and one is "locked" how can you force quite just that one?

In Safari -- or Firefox
if you have ten windows up, and one is "locked" how can you force quite just that one? No simple answer (if one exists at all), but I wonder if the reason that one window is 'locked' is because it generated a dialog somewhere buried on screen. If true, the window may remain unresponsive until you deal with that dialog. And just to avoid further confusion with the terminology: you close (NOT quit) a window.

To test alternaut's theory, next time a window locks up hit Expose (Edit: >All windows...probably F-9) and see if there's anything to see.

if you have ten windows up, and one is "locked" how can you force quite just that one? Which itself begs a question: why have ten windows open in Safari? -- FWIW —along with artie's Exposé suggestion — command-accent ( ⌘`) can be used to navigate amongst an app's open windows.

You misunderstood my suggestion... I meant for you to see if you can learn anything from Expose>All windows, which is invoked (by default, anyhow) by F9. ("Edit" did not refer to Safari's "Edit" menu, rather it meant that I had edited my post...my bad.)

F9 does, indeed expose all windows but it might be easier to press F10 instead (while in Safari). This shows only the active windows in Safari (or whatever current application you are in) so it will not show windows in other apps.

This is really picking at nits but for the benefit of future, perhaps less experienced and/or less informed, readers of this thread it should be noted that on Apple's current laptops and keyboards the user must also press and hold the fn key at the bottom far left of the keyboard to activate the F1 through F12 functionality. On these keyboards pressing F9 alone skips to the next tune in iTunes and F10 alone mutes the standard audio. So on these keyboards, to "Exposé" all windows for all applications press fn+F9 and to "Exposé" only the current application's windows press fn+F10.
This is made even more confusing because System Preferences > Exposé & Spaces > Exposé only mentions F9 and F10, ignoring the necessity of using the fn key to activate the F1 through F12 functionality. Note too that on third party and some older Apple keyboards this is probably reversed. In other words fn+F9 would skip to the next iTune while F9 alone would Exposé all application windows. I have fixed supposedly broken keyboards by pointing this out to the user.
If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Guys, F9 or F10 don't work for me at all on my new 27" desktop.
I do see the windows under the window menu.
But there is no way to close, or force close a specific window correct?
Pity as sometime funky windows and weird videos / dialouge boxes and other weird things that freeze up the front window and hence you have to force quit the whole app.
and you may be doing research and have four windows behind it.

It should be pointed out, though, that System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard provides a Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys checkbox, whereby one may reverse what's the default and what's invoked via the fn key.

To nitpick slightly, 10.6 has separate preference panes for Keyboard and Mouse. There is no Keyboard & Mouse prefpane.

Unless I'm misreading between the lines, kevs is unable to interface with the window in question because its content is causing Safari to hang. If so, he's stuck with the Wait Cursor (aka spinning beachball) and can neither click the red button nor effect any response from Safari via the Command-W key combo. I think the real question kevs is asking is this: if the content of a single tab or page is causing Safari to hang, is there a way to rid oneself of that single tab or page, thereby eliminating the hang, while allowing the rest of the application to carry on as usual? Unfortunately, the answer is "not yet." This functionality, known as sandboxing, is available in Google's Chrome browser, and is currently being incorporated into WebKit2. WebKit2 is a new API layer for WebKit designed from the ground up to support a split process model, where the web content (JavaScript, HTML, layout, etc) lives in a separate process from the application UI. This model is very similar to what Google Chrome offers, with the major difference being that we have built the process split model directly into the framework, allowing other clients of WebKit to use it...
...WebKit2 should be considered an early technology demo. It is not yet production quality.

Thanks for the additional info. Is the checkbox I described available in the Keyboard prefpane?

Maybe I surf a bit with Chrome. How would you force quit the culprit window in Chrome.
What about Firefox?

Not entirely, at least in my system. There is no mention of using F1 or F2 keys but that may be only for laptops (mine is a desktop with a standard Apple keyboard that has no fn key).

"Standard Apple Keyboard" is insufficiently specific for this discussion, I'm afraid. The Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad—the default keyboard which ships with current Mac Pros—does have an fn key. This aluminum keyboard was originally introduced in late 2007 (that's when I got mine), and AFAIK, it's been the "Standard Apple Keyboard" for going on three years now. (Though iMacs ship with the wireless version standard and the extended keyboard as a build-to-order option—just the reverse of the Mac Pro.) On this keyboard, BTW, Exposé's All Windows feature is, by default, invoked via F3; invoking it via F9 requires holding down the fn key. More info on this keyboard can be found in SchwarzTech » Review: Apple Aluminum Keyboard.

Since I don't have an Intel Mac, I can't use Chrome. And I'm sorry to say that I don't use Firefox, either, so I can't help you with either of those browsers.

My Mac Pro was one of the original models and it came with a wired keyboard, numeric pad included, and plastic (not aluminum) keys. In other words, it's the same keyboard that older desktops (like my G4) had. The aluminum keyboard was introduced at a later date and has now become "standard". Sorry for the confusion.
